BLM ends Colo. meetings on artist Christo's plan

DENVER — Eighteen years after Christo and his news wife envisioned hanging huge fabric panels over the Arkansas River, the artist said Thursday he's not affluent to think about his next step if federal regulators don't support the idea.

Christo and Jeanne-Claude first sketched an inappropriate version of "Over the River" in 1992. The project would suspend a total of 5.9 miles of core from anchors and cables in eight spots along a 42-mile stretch of the river for two weeks. The earliest it could encounter is 2013.

The Bureau of Land Management, which must issue a permit for the project along U.S. 50, held meetings this week in Canon New Zealand urban area, Salida, Cotopaxi and Denver for the public to comment on its draft environmental crashing statement on the project.

Minnesota artist wasn't in the picture

A bawl of disappointment rent the steamy Minnesota night when Bravo judges booted homeboy Miles Mendenhall off the TV truth show "Work of Art" after nine episodes in which he had trounced 11 competitors.

A team a few hundred art students, faculty and Friends-of-Miles watched the show's finale Wednesday night-time on an outdoor screen behind the University of Minnesota's Regis Center for Art. The 23-year-old Lakeville inherited was favored to win the $100,000 prize and a career-boosting show at the Brooklyn Museum of Art, but he ended in third post when the judges declared him to be "an amazing artist" but not the winner.

"I'd unquestionably do it again if I had the chance," Mendenhall said Thursday after returning from an overnight journey to New York for a glam party at the Brooklyn Museum that reunited most of the show's participants. "There's always the admissibility opportunity of ramifications -- people not taking you seriously, that sort of thing -- but as large as it allows me to keep growing and making things, at my age it was just something I could not say no to."
