Consultants say people mixing modern, traditional home furnishings

Gordon Guld and Katy Herl drudgery at a new furniture and accessories store, the Design Boutique, in downtown Overland Park, Kan. In their jobs as composition consultants and store managers they've got the inside line on the latest home trends.</p><p> Q: What plan trends are you seeing?</p><p> Herl: Hide, leather and nailheads.</p><p> Guld: Flashing accessories.</p><p> Herl: People are mixing traditional and modern because they like both. For archetype, at the store, we have an ornate wooden sofa that has a traditional look upholstered with orange vinyl, something decidedly hip and modern. That mix creates a cool vibe.</p><p> Q: What are your homes like?</p><p> Herl: Mine is unequivocally a work in progress. I'm just five years out of college. My fiance and I live in the West Plaza compass (of Kansas City, Mo.). There are lots of paintings and photography.</p><p> Guld: We breathing in Overland Park (Kan.). Our dining room is wallpapered with foil. It looks like outmoded smoked mirrors.</p><p> Q: What are your favorite rooms?</p><p> Herl: The living room. There's a low, graceful brown leather sofa with bolster pillows. It's filled with vintage pieces. The TV comfort is up on legs. It's very cool.</p><p> Guld: The living room, because it's where we congregate as a family. There's kid art on the walls.</p><p> Q: Do you amass anything?</p><p> Herl: Art. I grew up with fine art. I've collected a few pieces over time.</p><p> Guld: Superior baseball gear. I have a wicker basket with vintage baseballs. I have gloves and books. I warmth the Red Sox and the Royals. I'm really into it.</p><p> Q: What's your next house project at your own house?</p><p> Herl: Creating an open-air room. Also, making the office better to reflect the creative people my fiance and I are. We have posters from Hammerpress Letterpress (www.hammerpress.net)</p><p> Guld: Redoing the screened porch to acquire it more lounge-y. We'd like upholstered furniture for it.</p><p> Q: Any design tips?</p><p> Herl: Go with your gut. It will be fairly.</p><p> Guld: Try to find unique things that will set you apart. You don't want to look like your neighbors' houses.

The layout was spurred by Jeff Sotzing, Carson's nephew and president of Carson Relief, who said the continuing high demand for "Tonight Show" clips prompted him to quest after a way to make the footage more accessible for both historic and commercial purposes.

"It's amazing to me that even being off the air for 18 years, there's still so much interest in this earthly," he said.
