Basil is a self-made artist. At 18,
Basil won the First Place in the International Poster Competition
held in 1978. Thus, began Basil’s journey in art, which has
now made him one of Sri Lanka’s renowned artists. Basil exploits
the medium of watercolours innovatively to present Sri Lanka’s
rural life in a refreshing manner.
The haunting natural beauty of the village with its
myriad vibrant ways of living and its inexorable culture is central
to Basil’s painting. With his subtle and fine brush strokes
he unravels the aesthetic mood and feeling with great authenticity.
His previous solo watercolour painting exhibitions
were held at the National Art Gallery Colombo, Lionel Wendt Gallery
[Perspective of Life] Colombo, Hermitage Gallery Colombo and Auditorium
of Alliance Françoise Colombo [Facet of Rural Life]. He has
also participated in several Group exhibitions : Young Contemporaries
[1997,1998 & 1999], Moods and Modes, Navakalakaruvo [2001 &
2002] and images of Peaceful Life [2002]. Very recently he participated
in the International Artist Camp 2002 conducted by George Keyt Foundation.
Basil’s painting adorn reputed institutions
such as The President House of Sri Lanka, The Hatton National Bank,
The Central Bank of Sri Lanka and the Embassy of Sri Lanka in South
Africa.
